The Faber Academy, Writing Short Stories with Marcel Theroux: a 3 month practical course
Course begins Wednesday 5th October 2011

London WC1B 3DA
Ticket includes copies of the following collections
- Collected Stories of Lorrie Moore
- New Irish Short Stories edited by Joseph O’Connor
A short story can be a mere glance, an unspoken conflict, or a tiny readjustment in human affairs; but it can also explore other planets, reanimate the dead, encompass entire lifetimes, terrify, amuse, and console. This course will embrace all the possibilities offered by short fiction, championing above all the intense, brief, pleasure of an imagination working at peak intensity and unburdened by the obligation of sustaining the fictive dream for hundreds of flipping pages…
This course is aimed at burgeoning writers with some experience of writing fiction, whatever stage they may be at. This course will suit budding writers who are overawed by the gargantuan scale of the NOVEL; those who need regular deadlines to motivate them; and others who simply want the chance to play with the range of experiences short fiction offers.
Participants will be expected to complete at least three short stories during the course: two short ones (under 1000 words) during the first six weeks; and a longer project during the second.
Weekly classes will involve some classroom exercises and workshop discussions of students’ work in progress. There will be some reading and discussion of canonical short stories in different genres and also two guest tutors, published authors who will share their unique perspectives on short story writing.
